Creating Your Own Information Product: Foundation to Web Success
61Developing Information Products
One of the most important secrets to successfully building an online business is to create your own information product. There are other types of products you could work with, but information is by far the most lucrative, and least expensive to create.
Even if you're not that confident in your ability to create an information product, you could easily put the concept together and hire someone relatively inexpensively to write it for you. Web sites such as eLance are places you would go for this purpose.
If you're willing and able to write an information product yourself, if you commit yourself to writing at least 30 minutes a day, you should be able to have it ready in about a month.
Unless there is something you can really differentiate in, I would stay away from the making money online category, as it's filled with professionals that have been competing in that area for years, and it's extremely difficult to break into in any meaningful manner.
Niche Information Products
The first question always asked by people looking to create their own information product is "what should you choose as a topic?"
To begin with, get rid of the idea of a generalized topic, as that won't do you any good. For example, if you wanted to write about some type of fish to raise, it is far harder to write about 15 types of fish, and surprisingly, it may not appeal to that many people.
Over the years, one of the interesting and very profitable niche topics was Betta fish. Even today those who have ebooks written on them do very well.
All they do is put up a website or blog and write some basic, but good, information about the Betta, and then offer an in depth ebook to upsell them.
You can do this with any targeted niche. Think small and long tail, not big and general.
Affiliate Program
The reason why developing your own product is foundational to web success, is from there you can develop an affiliate program to expand your reach.
This gives you an opportunity to expand your offering, as many online marketers are always looking for products they can offer their email lists, blogs, or websites, in order to generate another revenue stream.
While you could do this if you have the licensing rights to someone else's product, you don't make near the money you would with your own product. The exception would be if you happen to get in early on an exceptional product where receiving a smaller percentage of sales is overcome by shear volume. That is very rare, and you really can't create a consistent business that way.
Mailing List
Another thing having your own product lends itself to is building up a mailing list.
Let's us Betta fish for an example again. Even though it may be a narrow niche, people who buy a Betta fish are sure to enjoy you sending them an occasional email giving them some more pointers or the latest information concerning Bettas, or maybe other pet fish.
Here you can upsell them with maybe fish tanks, filters, etc., to generate more sales.
You can build up a nice Internet business this way.
Ad Sales
Another often neglected stream of income is to include ad sales. This works well for any targeted niche site.
By ad sales I'm talking about from another source besides your own. You could use Google Adsense of course, or a number of others that are available to you.
If the niche is big enough, you could also look for companies who would place an ad on your Website. There are a lot out there looking for targeted content to place their ads beside.
You can also sale ads to your email list.
Creating a Product
Other than the couple of methods of creating a product above, of hiring someone to develop your initial idea, or write it yourself, there is a third option.
This especially works well for someone who simply doesn't have the time to create their own information product.
It involves acquiring the rights to an existing product. Almost all the so-called online gurus do this. What they do is take the product and tweak it to their own specifications, creating a new product.
At first this may sound unethical, but in fact, it's the way a lot of the industry runs.
Also consider the fact that much of the information we read is all repurposed. It's the way of life.
There are products created for those looking for what are called PLR products. You usually want to do this and sell it for a lower price. The key is to then follow up by up selling the customer with a secondary product.
Just be sure the first product is of highest quality.
Online Web Success
There you have a very basic, simple formula that has probably generated more web success and wealth than any others.
Once you get the hang of it with one product, you can repeat the process over and over again.
You create your own product and market it; offer an affiliate program to expand it; build an opt-in email list; and up sell the customers on that list; offer ads.
It's a proven and effective way to build a solid, consistent online business by thousands of people.
